Alaska Airlines — Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation
Through donations of airline tickets, sponsorships, employee volunteers and executive leadership, Alaska Airlines has significantly impacted countless community members through numerous non-profits including Make-A-Wish Alaska & Washington, Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Cancer Society, NBCCamps, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Ronald McDonald House, Independent Colleges of Washington, The Martinez Foundation, Aviation High School, Northwest Harvest, City Year Seattle/King County, Junior Achievement of Washington, Boy Scouts of America and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. For example, some 25 percent of all wishes granted to children in Washington involved donations from Alaska Airlines. "The Alaska employees turn what is the most stressful time in a family's life to a joyful, memorable experience," says Laurie H. Schmertz, director of donor & corporate donations of Make-A-Wish Alaska & Washington. Food and money from Alaska Airlines' "Pack the Plane" holiday food drive supplies nearly 200,000 meals to the hungry each year. Company employees volunteer hundreds of hours to repack and sort food. "The enormous support that Alaska Airlines gives to Northwest Harvest exemplifies the best of corporate philanthropy and highlights the dedication of Alaska Airlines corporate leadership and employees to help their neighbors in need," says Shelley Rotondo, former director of donor relations of Northwest Harvest.
