Profiles in Philanthropy
While we all talk a good game about embracing change, Dav'ne Stahley did so – and with gusto.
Nestled nicely with successful careers and community connections in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dav'ne and her husband answered the siren call and moved to Seattle last year. Active in the arts and tired of real winters, they sought an area abundant with cultural opportunities and lacking in snow to shovel.
A longtime AFP member, Dav'ne transitioned from her job as Senior Development Officer for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music to serving in a similar position for the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation. "It was quite a change coming to a new community and my AFP contacts have been so vital," she said. "This is a totally different environment, region, and culture. Being active in AFP has opened many doors."
Dav'ne (pronounced Dave-nee), brings her skills and talents as a consummate development professional and experienced consultant to improving the quality of life for patients and their caregivers affected by Parkinson's. She manages the organization's fundraising program to support a $500,000 budget, organizes the annual HOPE Conference on Parkinson's (the largest conference of its kind in the world), and coordinates Team Parkinson's. This year, the Team Parkinson's cycling group, included nearly 100 riders and raised $146,000 (a 35% increase over last year's revenue).
In addition to her work at the Conservatory, she previously served as Executive Director of the Trinity Irish Dance Company and Gilda's Club of Southeastern Wisconsin.
A member of the AFP Washington Chapter's Professional Education and Communications Committees, Dav'ne notes that AFP is a great way to connect with people, and not just for professional reasons. After missing out on three houses in this red-hot real estate market, a tip from an AFP colleague recently led to a successful purchase.
Look for Dav'ne performing with the Seattle Women's Chorus and at AFP events. For more information, you can contact her at webbwomann@comcast.net.

AFP Washington's Goal of Regional Programming
As part of its work to provide value to members throughout the state, the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Washington (AFP) has supported the Eastside Program Committee (EPC) in its first year of programming. The EPC was founded as an informal group in August 2005 by representatives of Eastside not-for-profit organizations to examine the needs of fundraising professionals working for agencies serving communities on the eastside of Lake Washington. The purpose of the EPC is to raise the profile of philanthropy on the Eastside, and to provide professional and peer support, accessible resources, and information sharing to fundraising professionals in this area.
After spending a year closely analyzing issues closely relating to eastside organizations - the EPC (a group of ten active members) formally became a part of AFP. The benefits of this partnership have been to increase AFP participation by Eastside representatives and to bolster collaboration between professionals throughout the Puget Sound region.
The EPC has offered Eastside locations for the monthly audio conferences, successfully attracting participants who would not have attended the sessions held in Seattle due to the distance and time commitment required. Furthermore, four new AFP programs have been held to date under the coordination of the EPC – an April roundtable on the challenges of Eastside fundraising, a June breakfast meeting on the state of Eastside nonprofits, a September breakfast meeting on the subject of how to build and manage rainmaker boards, and an October roundtable discussion entitled "Fundraising in an Increasingly Diverse Eastside Community."
The work of the EPC, combined with the establishment of the South Sound AFP chapter, and the offering of programming in the North Sound/Everett area, is part of AFP-Washington's ongoing effort to support the growth and professionalism of fundraising professionals regardless of their geographic locations.
Kirk Laughlin is the Development Director at Youth Eastside Services and Kelly Becker is the Development Director at Eastside Domestic Violence. For more information about beginning a regional group in your area contact AFP Washington at 206-367-8704.

Book Notes
"Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you." Carl Sandburg
How many times have you been told money can't buy happiness? Not only can money buy happiness, it can buy peace of mind, a healthier lifestyle, time to do the things you love, stronger relationships, security, and loads of fun.
In Money Can Buy Happiness: How to Spend to Get the Life You Want, personal finance columnist MP Dunleavy provides updated information on a familiar theme. She offers an antidote to empty spending and helps you reallocate your assets and start investing in your own ‘portfolio of happiness.'
Take the quizzes, work though the worksheets, and heed her sound advice. Creator of the "Women in Red" series for the MSN Money Web Site, Dunleavy shows you how to gain by giving, boost your fun yields, invest in security, and invest in yourself.
Control, status, sex – these are the hot buttons that get people to buy what they buy. Decisions are based on emotion, not intellect, and there are 16 consumer hot buttons that affect sales.
In Hot Button Marketing, you learn how to recognize these traits and be successful with your fundraising endeavors. Author Barry Feig identifies the hot buttons, which include the desire to belong, the excitement of discovery, the nurturing response, and wish fulfillment.
As Feig says, "Due to evolution and our planet's considerable resources, most of our physical needs are met, but not our psychological needs. Like a fingerprint, everyone's mind and motivations are distinct. The hot button marketer gets past human facades and breaks these down to psychological wants and needs. You may not agree with these needs, but to be successful, you need to sell to them."
A quick and easy read, reinforces what we already know about donors and their gifts, and some new ideas to consider.
Jeanne Thorsen, Executive Director
King County Library System Foundation

AFP Every Member Campaign
Each year members of the Washington State Chapter are invited to support the annual fund goals of the AFP Every Member Campaign. The AFP Washington Chapter will benefit from your gift and is appreciative of your continuing involvement in many ways, which makes such a difference in our Chapter as well as our International professional organization and those we serve. Thank you for being a member and considering a gift to the Every Member Campaign.
In 2007 the Every Member Campaign will help to further advance the ethical standards and best practices of fundraising professionals through education, advocacy and information. Recently, AFP members joined together in a national effort to contact Congress regarding legislation in the Pension Protection Act that, if enacted, will help leverage new funds and larger gifts for non-profits and in turn result in much needed human services for many people in many ways. Educational scholarships are awarded to people entering the fundraising profession, made possible by gifts to the Campaign. Resources and information are available to professional fundraisers to encourage continuous learning and the application of benchmarking and best practices in fundraising shops large and small, again funded by the Campaign.
As always, AFP serves a diverse membership and encourages the organizations we represent to serve our donors through the Donor Bill of Rights, full disclosure on sources and uses of funds and ethics in the solicitation and stewardship of those funds. So much more is available to members of AFP than what is covered by membership fees and program registrations. As our campaign title suggests, we hope every member will consider even a small gift. Many people make a significant impact, and your gift, whether $25, $250 or $1,000 will make a difference. Pledge your support online at the AFP website today by clicking here. Thank you!
